Setting goals

Setting goals is the start to a successful venture as well as leading you to a happier, fuller life.

You wouldn’t start a trip without knowing where you want to end up. If you didn’t have a goal or destination, it wouldn’t matter which road you took. Business and personal success is just like starting on a trip. You need to know where you want to end up and what it will take to get to the destination.

Setting goals is difficult, that is why many people don’t do it for their personal goals. Most businesses set yearly goals as part of their annual planning process. People should also have an annual planning process, not just making New Year’s resolutions (about 88% of these resolutions fail).

In order to set goals you need to understand what area of life you want to change or improve as well as what new skills you want to add. This requires a detailed inventory of what you already have and what you want to have at the end of the process. This is a daunting task. But in order to be successful in setting goals, this is very important.

Next you must have reasonable expectations that the goals will be attainable. Setting a goal such as obtaining a Million dollars in 1-week may not be attainable by everyone, but a steady increase in your personal wealth would be a good goal.

The next step in setting goals is to “Write it down”. Many authours have talked about this; as a goal not written down is just a wish, and fairy tales not withstanding, wishes do not always come true.

Now comes one of the most difficult parts of setting goals – believing that they are already in effect.

Many people fail at this stage because their belief in themselves and their goals has not become a burning passion in their life. If you were very honest in the goal setting phase, you have set goals that have different times for realization. You cannot get discouraged if things do not happen overnight. Some authours believe that it takes about 2-years for changes that you want to make in your personal behaviour to become permanent.

Setting goals is something everyone needs to do, we all do it subconsciously but these goals are usually short term goals. It is important if you want to become successful or to have a better life to work on setting goals that reflect not where you are but where you want to be.
